Turkmenistan and Malaysia strengthened their bilateral relations by signing two memoranda of understanding: one focuses on culture, arts, and heritage, while the other addresses the development of the rubber industry and economic cooperation. The signing ceremony occurred during President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Malaysia, as reported by Malaysian official media.
During the visit, the President of Turkmenistan met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Perdana Putra. The two sides discussed trade, investment, cooperation in the energy sector, higher education, tourism, and transportation. The Turkmen delegation, which included six deputy chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers and five ministers, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, actively participated in the discussions.
After the talks, the Prime Minister of Malaysia hosted an official lunch at the Seri Perdana residence in honor of the President of Turkmenistan. High-ranking government officials attended the event, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Arminzan Mohd Ali.
The trade relations between the two countries show impressive growth. From January to October 2024, the volume of mutual trade increased by 74.8%, reaching 63.28 million ringgits (13.9 million USD), significantly surpassing the figures from the same period last year.
The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in transportation, education, culture, tourism, and sports. They placed special emphasis on exchange programs between universities and research institutions. The leaders highly valued the partnership prospects secured by the signed agreements.
