Turkmen delegation held a series of meetings with representatives of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Trade Center and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva on Monday, during which Turkmenistan reaffirmed its strong commitment to become a full member of WTO.
The Turkmen delegation was headed by the Chairman of State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan Rahimberdi Jepbarov, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reported in its Tuesday press release.
The meetings focused on Turkmenistan's vision for the WTO accession process and the possibility of launching a working program to prepare the initial documentation.
The head of the delegation stressed the importance of developing internal institutional mechanisms for the talks, researching the implications of WTO membership, and bringing national legislation in line with the organization's rules.
Representatives of the relevant International Organizations affirmed readiness to provide further assistance to Turkmenistan in economic reforms and accession to the WTO. They also expressed hope that the WTO would play a coordinating role in providing assistance.
Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala met in Dubai (UAE) on February 14 and noted that Turkmenistan is interested in expanding cooperation with the organization.
