Turkmenistan and EU Discuss Gas Export Strategy

The 22nd meeting of the Joint Committee of Turkmenistan and the European Union, held on December 19, 2023, in Brussels, Belgium, addressed energy and environmental matters, gas export strategies, initiatives to reduce methane emissions and the development of renewable energy sources, including hydrogen.

The Turkmenistan delegation, led by Serdar Jorayev, Minister of Finance and Economy and co-chair of the Joint Committee on the Turkmen side, comprised the Deputy Minister of Education, representatives from the State Concern Türkmengaz (Turkmen Gas) and the Agency Türkmenhowaýollary, as well as representatives from other pertinent ministries, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reported on Wednesday.

The EU delegation comprised the Deputy Managing Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and representatives from various directorates of the European Commission who dealt with international partnerships, trade, energy, mobility and transport, climate change, environment, and research and innovation.

The meeting discussed Turkmenistan's macroeconomic situation and its intentions for integration into the world economy, particularly its aspirations for membership in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The two sides exchanged views on cooperation in transport, education, youth policy, research and innovation.

The delegation of Turkmenistan also met with representatives of the Directorate General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission, representatives of the EEAS, the European Executive Agency for Education and Culture, and the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission. The participants discussed a wide range of topics of mutual interest.
