The increase in exports is a direct outcome of the successful implementation of a number of infrastructure projects aimed at increasing the electricity production in Turkmenistan to 33 billion kWh per year.
During the first eight months of this year, Turkmenistan increased the value of its electricity exports by 151% compared to January-August 2019, ORIENT news outlet reported on Wednesday with reference to the country's State Statistics Committee. The physical volume of the deliveries increased by 124% during the period.
The news outlet said the increase in exports is a direct outcome of the successful implementation of a number of infrastructure projects aimed at increasing the production of electricity in Turkmenistan to 33 billion kWh per year.
The prime example is the country's first combined cycle gas-steam turbine power plant commissioned in 2018 on the territory of the Mary Hydroelectric Power Station. The plant is designed to generate 1,574 megawatts of electricity per year.
A power plant with a capacity of 432 megawatts is currently under construction in the Lebap velayat. The Japanese Sumitomo Corporation, in cooperation with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and the Turkish Rönesans Holding, carries out the construction.
According to the State Statistics Committee, due to the commissioning of new electric power facilities, for 8 months of 2020, Turkmenistan increased electricity generation by 13.5% during the first eight months of 2020 compared to the same period last year.
The groundbreaking ceremony of two more gas turbine power plants, with a design capacity of 70 megawatt/hour each, took place at the Turkmenbashi Complex of Oil Refineries (TCOR) in September. The new power units will ensure an uninterrupted and reliable supply of electricity to new facilities under construction at the TCOR.
