China Imports Over 2.5 bcm of Turkmen Gas in April

In April 2021, Turkmenistan received $216 per thousand cubic meters for its natural gas.

Turkmenistan exported 2.576 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China in April 2021, ranking first among China’s gas suppliers.

During the period, China imported a total of 4.227 billion cubic meters of pipeline gas, with Turkmen gas accounting nearly 55% of the supplies. Other major exporters of pipeline gas to China in April are Kazakhstan (617 million cubic meters), Russia (487 million cubic meters), Myanmar (318 million cubic meters), and Uzbekistan (229 million cubic meters), Russia-based Interfax news agency reported on Sunday citing data from the General Administration of Customs of China.

According to the General Administration for Customs of China, the price of Russian gas supplies to China in the second quarter of 2021 rose for the first time since the start of supplies – to $148 per thousand cubic meters from $121 in the first quarter.

Among the pipeline gas suppliers, Russia continues to supply gas to China at the lowest price. In April 2021, Turkmenistan received $216 per thousand cubic meters for its gas, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan - $179, Myanmar - $347.

Turkmenistan exports natural gas to China via Central Asia-China Gas Pipeline, comprising three parallel lines – A, B, and C. The construction of an additional line D is underway. Last year, China imported over 39 billion cubic meters of natural gas through the pipeline.

China has purchased over 300 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan since the launch of the pipeline in 2009 and is presently the major importer of Turkmen natural gas.
