Natural gas has been produced at the Malay field since 1986. The field not only provides natural gas to Lebap velayat, but also supplies energy products for the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China transnational gas pipeline via the 188-kilometer Malay-Bagtyyarlyk pipeline.

The Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China gas pipeline was launched in December 2009.
