Turkmenistan More Than Doubles Its Electricity Export

Presently, the major buyers of Turkmen electricity are Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan.

Turkmenistan in January-September of this year increased its electricity exports by 2.4 times compared to the same nine-month period of 2019. The physical volume of supplies increased by 2.1 times, Orient news outlet reports with reference to the data of the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan.

Presently, the major buyers of Turkmen electricity are Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan. In the near future, the country plans to increase its electricity supplies to neighboring Afghanistan.

According to the report, in January-October, the enterprises of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan increased electricity production by 40.3% compared to the same period last year. During the ten months of 2020, the plants fulfilled the production plan by 122.9%.

At the beginning of this year, Charymyrat Purchekov, who previously held the post of Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Minister, was appointed Minister of Energy of Turkmenistan. Appointing him to the post of the Minister, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the need to increase the production and export of electricity, and the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan power transmission line.

According to the industry’s development plan, annual electricity production in Turkmenistan should reach 33 billion kilowatt-hours by 2024. In order to achieve this goal, Turkmenistan modernizes the existing production facilities. In 2018, the country commissioned its first combined cycle power plant.
