Turkmenistan to Intensify Measures on Reducing Imports of Food Products

President Berdimuhamedov also said the state should intensify work on increasing the production of domestic consumer goods.

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov during the online cabinet meeting on Friday said the state should intensify work on increasing the production of domestic consumer goods and reducing the volume of imports of products, in particular, food products that can be produced domestically.

Stressing the need for measures in this direction, the Head of State addressed a number of relevant instructions to Chary Gylyjov, Deputy Chairman of the Turkmen Government, overseeing the country’s trade and textile complex, the country’s official media reports.

During the meeting, President Berdimuhamedov said in the last four months, despite the earlier instructions, the volume of some imported food products has increased. He added that among those products are potatoes, onions, garlic, fruits, flour, oil and other food products, as well as some industrial goods that can be produced domestically.

The Head of State then announced a severe reprimand to the Vice-Premier Gylyjov with a final warning to correct the shortcomings as soon as possible for the improper performance of his duties, weakening control over the activities of subordinate trade structures, allowing corruption in this area, and failure to prevent illegal acts in the sale of food products such as vegetable oil to the population.

The government meeting summed up the results of the work of sectors of the national economy for four months of this year and discussed a number of issues related to ensuring the welfare of the people of the country.
